A whole menu without gluten
Splendid Spoon says all its meals are gluten-free, and Daily Harvest says the same of all its food; both sell frozen food rather than kits, and both make it in facilities that also handle wheat or gluten. Green Chef sells kits on a Gluten Free plan and says it was the first meal kit company certified gluten-free, through the Gluten Intolerance Group; it also says its gluten ingredients are kept apart at every step up to the kit’s assembly. Purple Carrot’s Gluten-Free preference sends only gluten-free meals, though it says its facilities are not certified gluten-free.
Gluten-free dishes on a mixed menu
Home Chef calls its line Gluten-Smart, Sunbasket and Dinnerly call theirs Gluten-Free Friendly, Marley Spoon marks dishes with no added gluten, CookUnity calls its meals Non-Gluten Preferred, and Gobble says some meals each week are gluten-free or can be made so by leaving out an ingredient it packs separately. The number of these dishes changes every week. A box needs one recipe per dinner, so three dinners for two means three gluten-free recipes on the menu of the week you order: check that menu before you choose a box size.
No gluten-free plan
EveryPlate says it has no plan for gluten-free diets, Blue Apron marks wheat-free dishes with a WF icon and offers no plan for a specific diet, and the Factor pages we read make no gluten-free claim. HelloFresh’s home page says its menu has gluten-free options, while its FAQ says it offers no certified gluten-free plan.
Celiac disease and cross-contact
Only Green Chef describes a certification. Home Chef says its Gluten-Smart meals are not suitable for celiac disease and Sunbasket that its Gluten-Free Friendly recipes may not be, CookUnity suggests asking a doctor before ordering any prepared food, and Marley Spoon, Dinnerly and Gobble say they cannot guarantee against cross-contamination. A label describes the recipe, not the kitchen it was packed in. With celiac disease or a wheat allergy, read each service’s allergen statement in the table above and ask the service before you order: what a menu label can and cannot tell you.
