The second serving is part of the box
A meal-kit recipe for two makes two portions, even if only one person sits down to dinner. Order three of those recipes and you receive six portions. If your plan is three dinners for one, three portions remain for lunches or another meal.
EveryPlate starts the solo journey with a two-serving plan. Dinnerly has no one-person kit plan; it offers two-, four- and six-person boxes. Neither turns a two-serving recipe into a smaller meal when you select a one-person household in a comparison tool.
If that is exactly what you want, switch on portions for later in the meal plan matcher. It reports the extra portion count. It does not label food you intend to use as waste.
If you do not want planned leftovers
CookUnity starts at four single-serving prepared meals. Factor starts at six, with six, eight, ten, twelve, fourteen and eighteen-meal options. Purple Carrot Ready to Eat is six single-serving meals. Splendid Spoon has six-, twelve- and eighteen-item plans; choose actual meals when comparing dinner counts because its catalog also includes drinks.
For four dinners, Factor vs. CookUnity shows a concrete difference: CookUnity’s four-meal box can fit exactly; Factor’s smallest box leaves two meals for another occasion. A minimum is a purchase constraint, not a claim about portion satisfaction.
Compare what you receive and what you will eat
The cost per delivered serving is the full ongoing cart total divided by the portions in the box. It does not become the cost per dinner you planned if some portions are reserved for lunches. A six-portion box costing $90 works out to $15 per delivered serving, even when you initially wanted only three dinners.
Use the cart calculator to see both the per-serving bill and the surplus portions. Shipping and mandatory fees are required values; a blank charge cannot count as zero. Introductory discounts stay separate from ongoing totals.
A six-item box may not be six dinners
Daily Harvest sells prepared components such as bowls, smoothies, flatbreads and grains. If you select two smoothies, two sides and two items you will use as meals, the box has six items but only two planned meals under your definition. The calculator’s components mode asks you to make that count explicitly.
Splendid Spoon vs. Daily Harvest explains why a prepared meal plan and a component catalog need different counting rules.
Match your week as well as your plate
A four-meal prepared box still recurs unless you choose a one-time ordering path or stop future deliveries within the service’s rules. A pause can resume automatically. Read skip, pause and cancel before relying on a skipped week to end a subscription.
Start with how many dinners you actually want, whether another portion is useful, and how often you want a delivery. Those three answers are more informative than a service’s lowest promotional serving price.
