Is a meal kit worth it? Work it out for your week

A meal kit can be worth it when it replaces takeout, or groceries you would otherwise throw away, and rarely is when it replaces cooking you already do well and cheaply. What you spend on those dinners now, set against the kit’s full price with shipping, decides it.

At full price, for three dinners for two: the lowest rate a maker states is EveryPlate’s $6.99 a serving, before shipping; the lowest whole bill a maker publishes works out to $13.99 a portion with shipping (Dinnerly). Checked 5 Oct 2026 on the makers’ own pages; every service’s price.

Put in your own numbers

The meal kit vs groceries calculator takes your store’s prices and shows the cash you pay, the food a dinner eats and what stays in the cupboard, beside the same servings from a kit; its weekly view mixes kit, leftover, grocery and takeout dinners. Use the full price, not the introductory deal, which may cover one box or several: every service’s full price is what you pay once it ends. Count the boxes you might forget to skip too: each one ships and is charged, and the skip, pause or cancel planner puts a weekly reminder in your calendar.

When a kit can pay off

A kit can pay off when the alternative is a delivery order, or a cart of groceries that partly goes bad before you use it. Kits send most ingredients measured for each recipe rather than in shop sizes, and they take the planning and the shopping off your week. For someone learning to cook, each recipe arrives with its ingredients measured and a step-by-step card.

It is worth less if you would skip the cooking anyway. A kit you do not cook is the most expensive way to buy groceries.

When prepared meals can pay off

If the problem is time rather than ideas, a meal you heat in a few minutes is the closer substitute for takeout. Single meals suit one person, packed lunches and households where people eat at different times. Set their price a meal against what you spend on takeout, and against a kit’s price a serving: every service’s price lists both. Prepared meal delivery, compared.

When your own groceries win

If you already cook most nights, plan a few meals ahead and use leftovers, your own groceries may well cost less than a kit, especially for four or more people, where pantry staples go further; the calculator shows it with your store’s prices. Some people use a kit for two or three new dinners a week and shop for the rest.
