Meal kits for two: which box fits, and what it costs

Almost every meal kit is sized for two, so the real choice is how many dinners you want, how much cooking you will do and what the box costs after the first one.

Two, three or four dinners a week

Dinnerly, HelloFresh, Home Chef and Marley Spoon sell a box of two recipes for two people, so two dinners a week is possible without leftovers. EveryPlate, Green Chef and Purple Carrot start at three recipes. At the top end, HelloFresh, Home Chef, Marley Spoon and Dinnerly go to six recipes a week, EveryPlate to five and Green Chef to eight.

Count the nights you will actually cook. A box of four recipes in a week with two dinners out leaves two kits in the fridge, and their ingredients do not keep as long as your groceries would.

Cooking together, or two plates to heat

A two-serving kit is one recipe cooked once, shared at the table. If neither of you wants to cook on weeknights, prepared meals change the count: each person needs their own meal, so three dinners for two is six single meals. Factor, CookUnity and Splendid Spoon sell a box of six, and so do Purple Carrot’s Ready to Eat and Marley Spoon’s Balance lines.

Some couples mix the two. HelloFresh lets you add ready-made meals to the weekly kit box, and Home Chef adds Heat & Eat meals to its kits, so one of you can heat a meal on the night the other is out.

Enough for lunch the next day

Choose four servings per recipe instead of two and each dinner leaves two portions for the next day’s lunches. Dinnerly, EveryPlate, Green Chef, HelloFresh, Home Chef and Marley Spoon all sell four-serving boxes. Switch on spare portions in the matcher to see those boxes beside the exact ones, with the spare portions counted.

When you eat differently

At each kit service you pick the week’s recipes from its menu, so one box can hold a vegetarian dinner and a meat one. If one of you eats only plant-based food, Purple Carrot is plant-based throughout, and Green Chef and HelloFresh label plant-based recipes on their menus. A label is not an allergy guarantee: what a menu label can and cannot tell you.

The comparisons couples search for

EveryPlate vs Dinnerly sets a stated price per serving against a published box bill. HelloFresh vs Home Chef weighs menu styles and box sizes, and Dinnerly vs Marley Spoon compares two services that publish every box price. Every box after the first ships unless you skip it before the cutoff, so add a weekly reminder from the skip, pause or cancel planner once you choose.
