What arrives, and what you do
A meal kit gives you ingredients and a recipe to cook. A prepared meal is mainly intended for heating. Prepared components can be part of a meal, a snack or a drink; an item count alone does not tell you how many dinners you have bought.
Count recipes × servings.
Count single-serving meals.
Count the items you use as meals.
EveryPlate, Green Chef, Dinnerly and Gobble are cooking-first choices. Factor and CookUnity focus on single-serving prepared meals. Splendid Spoon sells prepared plant-based meals and drinks; select meal items when counting dinner portions. Daily Harvest’s catalog includes bowls, smoothies, flatbreads and grains, so six items need not replace six dinners.
Compare preparation tasks and pantry needs before choosing an express or oven-ready recipe.
Mixed services are not all the same box
Sunbasket lets you mix meal kits and single-serving prepared meals in one weekly order. Purple Carrot has Meal Kit, Ready to Eat and Mix & Match plans. Its standard kit is three two-serving recipes or two four-serving recipes; Ready to Eat is six single-serving meals.
HelloFresh offers prepared choices within the weekly box, while Home Chef spans meal kits, oven-ready and prepared formats. Blue Apron’s relaunched catalog includes kits and prepared meals through a la carte ordering and optional autoship. Marley Spoon’s Balance prepared line is distinct from its ready-to-cook kits.
That distinction matters when comparing minimums and prices. A two-person kit table cannot set the serving count or shipping price of a prepared plan at the same brand. Open the service profiles for the exact product before calculating.
Count portions, not just recipes
Three recipes for two people deliver six portions. One person eating three dinners has three portions left for another occasion. Three single-serving prepared meals deliver only three portions, but the service’s minimum box may be larger.
The meal plan matcher compares your people and meals with an actual box. It also keeps one-time ordering and longer breaks separate. If no exact box fits, allowing portions for later can reveal another option without pretending the minimum got smaller.
Menu preferences and allergies
Plant-based is useful for narrowing menu choices; it does not certify that a meal is free of an allergen. Sunbasket describes shared facilities handling major allergens, and Splendid Spoon’s terms allow for cross-contact in some facilities. Those choices should not be used as allergen-safe substitutes.
For an ingredient restriction, use the selected meal’s ingredient and allergen information. WhichMealKit’s matcher does not make a medical or allergy-safety recommendation.
Choose menu preferences without confusing them with allergy suitability.
After format, compare commitment
A prepared meal can still come with a weekly subscription. Cooking effort and ordering commitment are different decisions. Blue Apron vs. HelloFresh illustrates optional autoship versus a required weekly plan; the billing guide explains why cancellation does not always stop the next box.
