Meal delivery with a food allergy: filters and cross-contact

Twenty-two of the 23 services compared here say allergens may reach their food in the kitchens or facilities that pack it, and none of their pages promises a meal free of traces; Trifecta’s pages we read say nothing either way. Blue Apron and Sunbasket ask people with a severe allergy not to order. For a less serious need, some menus help you choose: CookUnity lets you filter out meals with dairy, gluten, soy, nuts or peanuts, Mom’s Meals filters its menu for ten allergens and ingredients, from egg and fish to tree nuts and wheat, Trifecta lets you filter out gluten, peanuts, dairy and soy when you pick your own meals, Tovala’s filter hides meals with the allergens you choose, though not its Extras, Nurture Life’s filter and each child’s profile leave out the allergens you set, Little Spoon’s allergen filter shows only the Plates without them, Gobble and Dinnerly mark nut-free meals, Sunbasket tags Soy-Free recipes, and Hungryroot leaves the allergens you set in your Food Profile out of every delivery. BistroMD has no filter: its customer service removes an ingredient you name, and with it every meal that has it. The table gives each service’s own words.

With a severe allergy

Blue Apron does not recommend ordering with a severe food allergy, Tovala says its meals may not suit one, and Sunbasket asks people with a very serious allergy or intolerance not to order. CookUnity, Tempo, Marley Spoon, Dinnerly and Gobble say they cannot guarantee a meal free of cross-contact or cross-contamination. A filter or a label describes the recipe, not the kitchen it was packed in, so if a trace could harm you, ask the service before you order, and read the allergen statement on each package when it arrives, as Factor asks you to.

Nuts and peanuts

CookUnity’s menu filter leaves out meals with nuts or peanuts, and Mom’s Meals’ filters leave out peanuts or tree nuts. For a child, Nurture Life makes everything in a facility free of peanuts and tree nuts, except coconut, though egg, fish, milk, sesame, soy and wheat are processed there, and Little Spoon puts no nuts but coconut in its Plates, made where gluten, dairy, soy and egg are also produced. Gobble says some of its meals each week are nut-free, and others can be made nut-free by leaving out an ingredient that comes packed separately: that ingredient still arrives in the box, so set it aside before you cook. Dinnerly puts a nut-free icon under some recipes, and HelloFresh says it has no certified nut-free plan. Most of these services name tree nuts and peanuts among the allergens their facilities handle.

Soy

Sunbasket tags Soy-Free recipes on its weekly menu, and CookUnity’s and Mom’s Meals’ filters leave out meals with soy. Hungryroot leaves out the allergens you set in your Food Profile and has a soy-free filter, and Trifecta’s filters can leave out soy when you pick your own meals. On every other menu, read each recipe’s ingredients for the week you order; none of the other pages we read names a soy-free filter or tag, and Tovala’s help page does not list the allergens its filter covers.

What a filter leaves to you

CookUnity says its filters cover the main allergens, not every ingredient, and every menu changes from week to week, so a meal that suited you once needs checking again when it comes back. Tovala’s filter skips its Extras, so check an Extra’s own allergen list. What a menu label can and cannot tell you explains the rest.

Gluten and dairy

Gluten-free meal delivery and dairy-free meal delivery give each service’s labels for those two, beside the same allergen statements. For a whole menu without animal products, see plant-based and vegan meal delivery.
