With only a microwave and a mini fridge
Most of these services sell single meals in boxes of six or more, so five dinners a week leaves one meal for a lunch; CookUnity also sells a box of four. Factor and Purple Carrot say their meals keep up to 7 days in the fridge and CookUnity 4 to 7, with a use-by date on each label, so a box of six covers a school week. Frozen meals keep longer (Splendid Spoon says three months in the freezer), but the freezer compartment of a mini fridge is small: measure yours before you order a box of frozen meals. Daily Harvest’s smoothies also need a blender.
With a shared kitchen
In a suite or apartment with a stove, a kit works, but kits are sized for two or more servings a recipe. Cooking for one, half of each dinner goes in the fridge for the next day; two roommates can share a box instead, since three recipes for two covers three dinners for both. Each kit expects a few pans and pantry staples, so check what comes in a meal kit, and what you need at home against your kitchen first, and meal delivery for one person for the cheapest way to cook for one.
Getting the box to your room
Meal boxes travel with ice packs or dry ice and are meant to go into the fridge or freezer the day they arrive. CookUnity says a box should not sit outside for more than an hour, and Factor leaves its box at the door between 8 am and 8 pm. In a residence hall the box usually goes to a mail center or front desk, and each campus sets its own rule for perishable packages:
| Campus | Its rule |
|---|---|
| The University of Texas at Austin | A perishable package from a commercial carrier has to be picked up within 48 hours of arriving; after that the university may throw it away. Residence hall mail service |
| University of Central Florida | Mail centers take perishable packages only from carriers such as USPS, FedEx, UPS and DHL, ask you to pick them up the same day, and throw one away after 7 days unclaimed. Housing mail |
| University of Arizona | Hall front desks cannot accept perishable food, or anything that needs refrigeration, from a delivery company that is not a certified mail carrier. Sending mail to the dorms |
| University of Kentucky | Front desks accept perishable deliveries but have no refrigerated storage, and keep them typically no more than 24 hours. Student mail |
| Penn State, University Park | Packages marked perishable go in a refrigerator at the desk and are thrown away after 3 days. University Park mail services |
| University of Utah | Perishable packages are kept for 24 hours and then thrown away, and front desks do not accept food deliveries for you. Desk and mail services |
So before your first order, ask your hall’s mail center whether it takes a perishable box from the company that delivers it and how long it keeps one, then choose a delivery day when you can collect the box within a few hours.
What it costs
The first table prices six single meals at each service’s full price, before tax: the figure to plan a term with, because a first-box deal applies once. Every service’s full price sets them beside the kits, and the cost calculator adds the deal back for the first delivery only.
Compare
Factor vs CookUnity compares two services whose meals go in the fridge, and Splendid Spoon vs Daily Harvest the two that ship frozen. Prepared meal delivery covers every service’s single meals to heat.
