What each label sets a limit on
Sunbasket’s plan puts the most numbers on the page: calories, protein, fiber, carbohydrates, sodium and added sugar, each a serving. That is the range its recipes are written to, so read each recipe’s nutrition before you add it to your box and set it against your own targets. BistroMD’s Diabetic program sets one limit, 30 g of net carbs or less a meal, though its plans answer says 25 g a serving. Mom’s Meals says its Diabetes Friendly menu is lower in carbs, with no figure on the page. CookUnity says its Diabetes Friendly meals follow Mayo Clinic guidelines and are reviewed by registered dietitians. Splendid Spoon has no label, but gives about 24 to 29 g of carbohydrates for each noodle bowl. We found no diabetes label on the other services’ pages; Blue Apron’s menu could not be checked for this page.
A kit to cook, or a meal to heat
Sunbasket’s Diabetes-Friendly plan is kits: you cook, so the oil, the salt and the size of the portion on your plate are partly yours. CookUnity, Mom’s Meals, BistroMD and Splendid Spoon send meals already cooked, one serving each, so the nutrition on the label is what you eat; BistroMD’s meals and Splendid Spoon’s soups, noodles and dishes arrive frozen.
CookUnity’s Diabetes Friendly meals
CookUnity sells its Diabetes Friendly meals to healthcare providers, who order them for their patients or let them choose their own. If your doctor, clinic or health plan works with CookUnity, ask them how to get them. Ordering for yourself, filter CookUnity’s menu for low-sugar meals: CookUnity says most have under 10 g of total sugar a serving, and each meal shows its carbohydrates and sugar.
Counting carbohydrates on other menus
Several services label lower-carb meals without mentioning diabetes. Home Chef’s Carb-Conscious meals have under 35 g of carbohydrates a serving, Factor’s Low Carb meals roughly 35 g or less, Tempo’s Carb-Conscious meals under 35 g and CookUnity’s Carb Control meals under 35 g of net carbs; HelloFresh’s Carb Smart recipes come with no figure. Low-carb meal delivery gives every service’s line, and low-sodium meal delivery the sodium limits.
Your care team sets the plan
Sunbasket itself says to talk to your diabetes care team about which foods work best for you. A label is not a treatment plan: if you take insulin or another medicine for diabetes, check a change in what you eat with whoever manages it. This page compares what the services say about their meals, not what anyone should eat. What a menu label can and cannot tell you explains the rest.
