Low-sodium meal delivery: what each service’s label means

Four of the 23 services compared here put a number on their low-sodium meals: BistroMD’s Heart Healthy program holds meals to 600 mg of sodium or less, and CookUnity’s Sodium Wise meals and Factor’s lower-sodium meals each have 700 mg or less a serving, both showing every meal’s sodium. Little Spoon, which cooks for children, says every one of its Plates has under 500 mg, and Nurture Life says it keeps sodium low in its children’s meals, with no figure. Splendid Spoon sells a Low-Sodium Diet box of eight meals with no subscription, and HelloFresh tags some recipes Sodium Smart, Hungryroot has a Less Sodium filter and Tovala a Lower Sodium one, none of them saying what it means in milligrams. Mom’s Meals has a Lower Sodium menu built on the American Heart Association’s guidelines, with no figure, and puts numbers on two others: under 800 mg for its heart-friendly meals and under 700 mg for its renal-friendly ones. Purple Carrot has no label, but its nutrition figures count the salt each recipe adds. We found no low-sodium label on the other twelve services’ pages.

A number, a tag, or neither

A low-sodium label means what the service says it means, so read the line beside it. CookUnity and Factor give the same limit, 700 mg of sodium a serving, and both let you choose those meals on their menus; CookUnity’s menu filter calls them Sodium Wise. Splendid Spoon’s box is a choice of any eight from its low-sodium line, and it ships without a subscription, so you can try it once. HelloFresh’s Sodium Smart tag sits beside its other tags on the weekly menu, and none of the HelloFresh pages we read gives a figure for it, so check the sodium in each recipe’s nutrition facts before you pick it.

Meals to heat: the salt is already in

CookUnity, Factor and Splendid Spoon sell meals that arrive cooked, so the sodium on the label is what you eat; there is no salt to leave out. Factor says its meals need some sodium because they are delivered fresh rather than frozen: a measured amount, with vacuum-sealed packaging, keeps them fresh. Splendid Spoon’s low-sodium meals arrive frozen.

Cooking a kit with less salt

A kit you cook leaves part of the salt to you. Purple Carrot says its nutrition figures already count the salt its recipes add, and suggests rinsing canned or boxed items, which it says cuts their sodium by about 40%, and adding less salt as you cook. The HelloFresh recipes tagged Sodium Smart on the menu we read are kits you cook, so the same choices are yours at the stove.

A sodium limit from your doctor

A label is not a diet plan. If you have been given a daily sodium limit, add up the meals you plan to eat from each one’s nutrition facts and check the total with whoever set the limit; this page compares the services’ labels, not anyone’s health needs. What a menu label can and cannot tell you explains the rest.

Compare

Factor vs CookUnity sets the two services with a 700 mg line side by side, and Purple Carrot vs Splendid Spoon the plant-based kit beside the low-sodium box. Prepared meal delivery covers every service’s meals to heat.
