High-protein meal delivery: the protein behind each service’s label

Thirteen of the 14 services compared here label high-protein meals, and the label means very different amounts. Marley Spoon’s protein choices have at least 45 g of protein a serving and HelloFresh’s higher-protein options typically 40 g; Factor and Home Chef set the line at 30 g, Blue Apron labels recipes at 30 g and at 45 g, CookUnity’s meals have 25 to 30 g, Purple Carrot’s 15 g and Daily Harvest’s smoothies 10 g. Five name no figure. A label describes the dish; it is not a nutrition plan.

What the figures mean for a dinner

Every figure is per serving: one person’s share of a kit recipe, or one tray of a prepared meal. A kit for two with 40 g a serving gives each of you 40 g, whatever the size of the box. HelloFresh says “typically”, CookUnity gives a range and Factor says many of its meals go past 50 g, so if you track a number, read each dish’s nutrition before you order.

Kits to cook or meals to heat

Factor’s High Protein meals (30 g or more) and CookUnity’s (25 to 30 g) arrive cooked, one serving to a tray, so the label is what is on the plate. Marley Spoon, HelloFresh, Home Chef, Blue Apron and Sunbasket put high-protein recipes on a kit menu that carries everything else, so how many you can pick changes from week to week: three dinners for two needs three of them on that week’s menu. Purple Carrot’s High Protein preference, at 15 g, is the line for a plant-based menu. Daily Harvest’s high-protein items are smoothies, not dinners.

Your own target

A label tells you a dish meets the service’s own line. If a doctor or dietitian has given you a protein target, check it against each dish’s nutrition information, not against the label.
